Synopsis

With hopes of providing her son a better life, FERNANDA and her ten-year-old son JUAN made the dangerous journey from Central America and across the U.S. border three years earlier. But when they were detained by the U.S. Border Patrol, they were placed in different detention centers. Fernanda was deported, but Juan spent months at the detention center before he was placed with a foster family in Arizona.

After a three-year battle, Fernanda has finally been granted permission by the U.S. Government to legally enter the U.S. and reunite with her son whilst their asylum case is pending. Staying with her cousin ALANA and her family in Los Angeles, and sick with worry, Juan finally arrives from Arizona.

When Fernanda greets him at the airport, they each face a mix of emotions. Fernanda is stunned by how much Juan has grown and changed. Even though they have been able to keep in touch over video messages, she’s not prepared to meet the young man before her, no longer the small boy she last saw. After lovingly embracing, they pull apart, an abyss of things unsaid opening between them.

As the film progress, it’s not the reunion she has been dreaming of, and Fernanda struggles to connect with her son. He misses new life in Arizona, and feelings of abandonment and anger hinders him from connecting with his mother.

Fernanda will be forced to embrace their new relationship and come to terms with the fact that even though they are together again, things between them will never be exactly the same. But just as she feels the weight of her guilt about to crush her, Juan turns a corner, and shows her that no matter what happens, he just wants his mamá.
